Grummitt

The surname Grummitt is apparently of Dutch origin. The first Grummitts came to England to help drain the fens in Lincolnshire. From there, they spread around the country. Our Grummitts were at Clophill, Bedfordshire, from early in the 19th century.

Somebody in the USA has also researched the Grummitts of Clophill, Bedfordshire. He thinks that the name is of French origin and the first French ancestor to live in the village is Jacques Groumont. Gradually over time the surname changed to Grummitt. He thinks that Jacques Lane in Clophill is named after this Jacques Groumont. We haven't been able to verify this. We've had the parish records searched, and before the marriage of James Grummitt and Ann Saunders in 1819 there were no Grummitts in the village.

Elizabeth and Gladys Grummitt Nell Pickett, nee Grummitt and her daughter Gladys. (Nell's given names were Eleanor Elizabeth.) Gladys was born 24th June 1913

This is the Grummitt line we've researched:

  • Their son James b.1820 married: 1) Rhoda, 2) Elizabeth Mann in 1846 (they had 5 children), 3) another Elizabeth before 1871, 4) Ann before 1881
  • James and Elizabeth's son William b.1848 married Elizabeth White in 1868 (they had 4 children)
